Richard Sawtell lived for more that 25 years at Watertown, Mass.Then, with sons Jonathan & Zachariah, became an original proprietor & Settler of the new plantation of Groton, Mass.
In Grotton he was a proprietor with a 20 acre right; He served as the first town clerk there from 1662-64.

King Phillips War broke out in 1675 and his home was one of the five Garrison houses in Groton.

On 13 March 1676, Groton was burned & the inhabitants, including Richard Sawtell & his family were driven out.

He returned to Watertown about this time, as did several of his children. He served as selectman in Watertown in 1689;

In 1670 or 71, Richard Sawtell and his wife took into their home the illegitimate child of Zachariah Smith, deceased. In 1672, he went to court against Thomas, John and Joseph Smith to collect for the childs keep out of the estate of the boys father, and charged them with illegally administering the estate. He won l10.

He mentions wife Elizabeth, and the following children: Obahiah, of Groton, Son Enoch, of Watertown; Daughters Bethia, Hannah Winn, Ruth Hewes, John & Jonathan (deceased); Also, children of son, Zachariah; He mentions daughter Starlings children. His brother, Thomas & a sister whose married name was Kenrick.

His lands were at Watertown except for his 20 acre right in Grotton; He died 21 August 1694, an aged man.; Elizabeth died 18 October 1694 and son Enoch was granted administration of the estate.
